Spinal Decompression and Traction at Achieve Health and Wellness
Your spine is a marvelously complex and capable structure -- but when things go wrong with it, the pain and dysfunction you experience can prove equally impressive for all the wrong reasons. Many of these painful issues stem from compression of sensitive nerve tissue and/or problems with the spinal joints. Fortunately, taking the pressure off doesn't necessarily require surgical intervention. Here at Achieve Health and Wellness in Bolingbrook, we get the same results using a form of traction called spinal decompression therapy.
What Is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression?
Your spine isn't just the physical support for your upper body; it's also the housing for body's nerve center, the spinal cord. Major nerve roots branch out from the spinal cord to other parts of the body, but they have to make their way through relatively narrow spaces between vertebrae before they can serve these other areas. Even a "minor" spinal misalignment, or an age-related problem such as bulging discs or bone spurs, can pinch off the signals that would normally flow through these nerve roots. (A bulging, collapsed disc can also add stress to the spinal joints, causing pain and inflammation.) The results may include cervical radiculopathy, sciatica, neck pain or back pain.
Traditional spinal decompression surgery tries to remedy these problems by removing bits of the discs or fusing spinal segments together. These invasive surgeries are best left as a final resort. Non-surgical spinal decompression can ease nerve impingement simply by creating more space between the vertebrae. As you lie comfortably on a motorized treatment table, the table gently pulls outward on the spine, drawing discs back into their rightful position and re-hydrating them to help restore normal disc height and joint function. This form of traction is often recommended for herniated discs, bulging discs, spinal stenosis, chronic back or neck pain, and facet syndrome ( spinal joint wear and inflammation).
A Valuable Complement to Chiropractic Care
Spinal decompression can work hand-in-hand with the chiropractic care and other natural services offered here at Achieve Health and Wellness. If your nerve impingement was initiated or aggravated by a spinal misalignment, we may recommend both forms of care as part of your holistic treatment plan. We may even prescribe corrective exercises and lifestyle changes to help you maintain your new and improved alignment.
